some rather memorable moments in the catalogue of jimmy tamborello, aka dntel, feature collaborations with neatly paired guest vocalists such as ben gibbard, jenny lewis, baths and mia doi todd, to name a few. tamborello has always paid a good deal of attention to picking these singers carefully, with his backing a perfect complement- the producer humbly stepping out of the spotlight, allowing the guest to shine.

verona based producer and dj luca ballerini is our latest discovery and a perfect proof that cocoon recordings is still looking for new kids on the block and gives them the chance to step into the arena. although we have to admit that luca ballerini is not a complete rookie anymore. after his debut on siena recordings in 2010, ballerini founded his own plattforms and released several productions on musical metaphor and wax jam.

black rox is back with 2 more sneaky soft rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked cd wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. the a side sabu dance combines horns, flutes & percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from africa via berlin. this has been thoroughly road tested by soft rocks at their kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. side b. don t worry it s not the tantric one s ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of uk. reggae at is s finest. adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. a perfect track for blissful summer evenings (yeah whatever!).

after few nolder, italian fellow lehar aka lorenzo esposito is the second new signing for connaisseur this year. apart from his residency at the cirq club in venice and regular bookings at some of the best clubs and parties in italy and malta, lehar truly is a very talented producer as well. some of you might have heard the free download for lehars remix of kollektiv turmstrasses classic *tristesse* which has caused some attention on him the past weeks and was therefore the perfect precursor for this release. his demo impressed us very much and both titles really hit our taste. and as though this wasn t enough, together with his demo he delivered a remix by his friend and probably hottest producer of the moment: mario basanov, head of the label boso and mostly know under his moniker ten walls.

since the release of his previous album paradise for all, the profile of guts has grown a lot to become one of the main french producer and a recognized name on the european scene. his hit brand new revolution was played by many radios worldwide and even synchronized in grand theft auto v. his compilation series beach diggin is now a reference for summer and quality music.

the first full ep on credo by folker zwart from amsterdam, and here we go with some modern techno amusement like a fresh breeze and showcasing the talent in here. while all the shades are undoubtly focussed on the dancefloor shade 1 is probably the most peaktime-like approach while shade 2 creates an amazing atmosphere with its pure and clean pads and sounddesign. shade 3 even crosses some slightly jazzy path and alltogether a perfect definition of the credo idea to present colors and not only shades.

accompany the reissue of woo s into the heart of love, emotional rescue is releasing a limited 7inch featuring songs not included on the vinyl pressing, plus a previously unreleased version of the beautiful title song, which only appeared in later form on their cd only, la luna album. with the original into the heart of love album only appearing as a 60 minute cassette-only release, several of the albums songs could not make the first time vinyl issue from emotional rescue. therefore, this limited edition 7inch includes two of those ommited songs. the wistful english folk duet between mark ives and sue amor on make me tea and it s sibling on the album, a little long way. possibly woo s most straight forward folk song, make me tea is as the title imagines a very particular english poem. recording as a duet between two late night lovers, awaking from post-love making slumber to find peace and with it, a nice, perfect cup of tea. however, it is the inclusion of the unreleased version of the title song, magic in the dark that is worth the admission price alone. taken from the cd only album, la luna, the original s short and gentle story of late night love is presented here in it s alternate demo form. a different vantage point is shown in revelation and then exhaltation. the sadder start expands in to a beautiful and wonderus folk celebration. mark s vocals and guitar are later joined by gentle rhythmic percussion from brother clive, before clarinets duet to a yearning finale. woo once again showing their unique mix of folk and new age electronics. a one off to cherish.

julia govor & rashid ajami stunning collaboration a regret gets perfect reworks from philip bader (moon harbour, saved, highgrade), felipe valenzuela (cadenza, melisma) and agraba (culprit, akbal music). what else to say? just enjoy the music.

take me away exemplifies the boys cinema-scope, widescreen sound and ambition. a tight, in the pocket bass line takes root over skittering, celestial synths and only girls sublime vocal line. this could be a phuture-phunky quincy jones track, utterly infectious. in perfect tonal-tandem with this is the uplifting, techy-pop of u know.

pop music rarely comes as honest and heartfelt as when delivered by molly nilsson. ltd to 500 8 track ep. having traveled around the world singing to the romantic and the doomed, nilsson found herself in the late summer of 2014 in buenos aires. inspired by the crumbling andscape and the heavy hearts that populate it, sólo paraíso is not only an ode to a specific time and space but a musical novella that meditates on youth, idealism and belonging. the soundtrack to a summer you thought you had when looking over bleached out old photo albums.

the swiss-born dominik daks presents one of the best records that was ever released on ostfunk records. perfect for the summer, with groovy deep-house vocals, lets lilly the open air stages boil. the track gets as a top class wolfgang lohr-typical interpretation thanks to his remix.

occasionally jay haze will take some time away from his productions on contexterrior to release music with other labels like leftroom and desolate, or he ll provide a mix for fabric. here, in 2014, jay haze debuts on soul clap - and brings some friends with him. these friends are signor andreoni, an italian producer that s not released a solo record since 2010 (his last was with haze) and the unknown jordy lockruf. -take a dip- is a new-school cut of retrospective italo with those moaning synths perfect for a rimini dancefloor, while the two joints with lockruf provide one clunky, slide guitar twanging disco jam and a shuffling house cut that ever so lightly verges on electro swing - but not too much!

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

danny daze is back on ellum with another killer single, flange. a monster of an ep that is perfect for summer madness! the a side feature the original version of flange, an unadulterated slice of storming techno complete with dissident car engines screaming in and out of the mix, heady stuff. on the flip and danny delivers a sparse jacking dub version of flange. finally the ep is rounded off with the effervescent transcendentalness of ritmo, another great release from ellum!
